Westernization and the Search for a “Russian Soul”

March  14, 2023

Dr. James L. West

In this free web series for Santa Fe World Affairs Forum members and friends, historian Dr. James L. West explores the troubled relationship between Ukraine and Russia from earliest times to the present war. Join us Tuesdays from 10:30am to noon beginning February 14 for dynamic discussions leading up the Santa Fe World Affairs Forum’s symposium April 13-14 on today’s Russian invasion of Ukraine and its many reverberations.

Dr. West employs art and music to trace the course of the tangled history of Ukraine and Russia through cycles of conquest and subjugation, revolt and emancipation. Beginning with the founding of Kievan Rus, he examines the geography and ecology that entwined the “Wild Field” of the steppes with the “Forested Lands” to the north and the events from which founding mythologies claimed by both Russia and Ukraine are derived.

From these struggles, a modern, forward looking Ukrainian nation emerged against all odds to try to join Europe, only to be confronted by a backward-looking Russia determined to reignite those conflicts and drag Ukraine back into the Eurasian steppes. Herein, perhaps, lies the dynamic of the current war.

Below is the link to register for this series. You only have to register once to receive the information to join via Zoom in meeting format, which allows participants to see and hear each other and interact with Dr. West.

The Middle East and the United States: Continuing Challenges and threats in the Next Decade

December 1, 2022

Dr. Emile Nakhleh

The Middle East in 2021-2022 has experienced major developments and faced many challenges, politically, economically, militarily, and socially. In addition to the ongoing disastrous war in Yemen, the protests in Iran, and the massive human rights violations across the region, the Middle East has been affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine, economically and politically. Several Middle Eastern states are on the verge of collapse, including Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon. Bloody confrontations between Israelis and Palestinians in the Occupied Territories continue with no resolution in sight and will be exacerbated by the resurgence of ultra-right politics in Israel following the November 1 elections.

The Middle East has also seen a disconcerting rise in poverty, unemployment, corruption, serious environmental degradation, and distrust of political and social institutions. US policy in the region, especially with Saudi Arabia, in being tested and challenged. Tribal illiberal nationalism, much like in the United States and other countries, is also on the rise in the Middle East. Yet some new alliances and relations have been forming among several states in the region. Many of these developments, including terrorism, pose a challenge to American interests in the region. Understanding the Middle East is best achieved through five major themes: Geography, Religion, Natural Resources (oil and natural gas), Relations with Foreign Powers, and Governance (Rulers and Ruled).

Dr. Emile NakhlehDr. Nakhleh is a former Senior Intelligence Service (SIS) Officer (CIA), a former Research Professor and Director, GNSPI (UNM), a Founding Director, Political Islam Strategic Analysis Program (CIA), a Founding Director, Global and National Security Policy Institute (UNM), a Life Member, Council on Foreign Relations, a Consultant on the Middle East, political Islam, radicalization, terrorism, and intelligence. Sorting Fact from Fiction: Navigating Today’s News Landscape

October 19, 2022

Sarah Hood

Trust in the news media has continued to erode in recent years and many experts believe this to be a contributing threat to democracy. Mis- and disinformation campaigns, both foreign and domestic, have propagated with astonishing speed via social media platforms, leaving chaos and public mistrust in their wake. How can a country so wracked by strife find its way in today’s information landscape? News and media literacy are key components to answering this question. The ability to critically evaluate the news around us is essential for meaningful civic engagement that is crucial to sustained national conversations about current events and their effects on each of us.

The Los Alamos view of the Manhattan Project

September 22, 2022

Alan B. Carr

In August 1942, the Manhattan Project was formally established. Its mission: Build an entirely reliable atomic bomb as quickly as possible. It’s been estimated that half a million people worked on the project in some capacity at one point or another during the war at installations all over the country. The three main sites were Oak Ridge, Hanford and Los Alamos. “MANHATTAN” tells the story of the project from the Los Alamos perspective. Led by J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Los Alamos technical staff of approximately 1,700 employees designed, built, tested, and helped deliver the world’s first nuclear weapons in combat only 27 months after the Laboratory held its first major technical conference. Atomic bombs helped bring history’s deadliest conflict to a victorious conclusion, but not before 60-80 million people had been killed worldwide.
