Brian E. Carlson, Ambassador, experienced public diplomacy specialist and a former Career Minister in the U.S. Foreign Service

Ambassador Brian E. Carlson, an experienced public diplomacy specialist and a former Career Minister in the U.S. Foreign Service, currently represents the international media and audience analysis firm InterMedia Research Institute on defense, diplomacy and strategic communication matters. From 2006 to 2010, Ambassador Carlson was the State Department’s liaison with the Department of Defense on strategic communication and public diplomacy.

Carlson served over 36 years in the Foreign Service, including as Ambassador to the Republic of Latvia 2001-2005. Other postings abroad took him to Spain, England, Norway, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Venezuela. His focus throughout was the struggle to win foreign public support for American political and economic policies during and after the Cold War. He was an author of the 2008 Defense Science Board study of public diplomacy and strategic communication, a board member of the Public Diplomacy Council – a SFWAF Symposium Partner – as well as on the boards of the U.S. Baltic Foundation, and the Association of Crows Information Operations Committee.

Parking

The Visitors Parking Lot is on your left as you enter campus. A few handicapped parking spaces are located at the Visitor’s Circle right in front of the fishpond area and below the Peterson Student Center. A few more are located behind the Peterson Center as follows. Just before the Visitor’s Circle, look for the fork in the road where you would normally drive to the left to get to the Visitors’ Parking Circle just below the Peterson Center. Instead, turn right and follow the drive up to the other parking area. There are two or three handicapped parking spaces on the left. Please note that this parking lot is not open to the public, but handicapped folks are allowed to park in the designated spaces.
